CEH vs. PenTest+

CEH vs. PenTest+

If you are interested in getting certified in the cybersecurity field, you have probably noticed that many of the exams are similar and cover almost the same objectives. For example, CEH and PenTest+ have very similar features, but they lead you to achieve different goals. So, what is the difference between CEH and PenTest+?

The PenTest+ is oriented towards penetration testing and assessment of vulnerabilities, while CEH is only concerned with penetration testing. Also, they differ in the length of the exam. While CEH includes 125 questions and takes up to 4 hours, PenTest+ is 2 hours and 45 minutes with 85 questions.

In this article, I have focused on the similarities and the differences between CEH and PenTest+. I have discussed the benefits that you can get out of them, and which one is suitable in different circumstances. Once you understand the differences between these two certifications, you will know which really works for you and get you the desired results and goals.

CEH vs. PenTest+: Similarities

Both CEH and PenTest+ are concerned with cybersecurity, which is exactly what confuses the candidates. The objectives of both of the certifications are designed by Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) that are highly skilled in ethical hacking and penetration testing.

Both of the certifications have the same duration of validity. They are valid for three years, once from the date of the exam, and the recertification process is the same for both CEH and PenTest+. Furthermore, they are widely recognized, so they are available in different countries.

Both CEH and PenTest+ are ANSI-accredited which means that once you pass the exam, you get a trustworthy certification that demonstrates your knowledge and skills in the cybersecurity field. That is why these certifications can set you apart from the competition when it comes to getting a job or a promotion.

CEH vs. PenTest+: Differences

Even though these two certifications sound quite the same, they differ in several features. These features can be crucial factors when it comes to getting a job in a certain field, or the time and money needed for passing the exam in the first place.

Cost

Since IT certifications can be quite pricey, it is important to understand what each certification offers you and why sometimes spending a small fortune would be worth it.

When it comes to CEH and PenTest+, you can immediately notice the cost difference. While they are very similar in the objectives they cover, they are quite different in their price. CEH costs $1,299, but the PenTest+ is only $249.

This might confuse you a great deal, and your first choice would be to go for the cheaper one. However, make sure that you understand what you will get with each certification. They are different for a reason, so the price should not be the most important factor in your choice.

Exam Difficulty

If you have done your research about both of the certifications, you have probably found out that the PenTest+ is considered to be very challenging even for those who already have experience in the field. Even though both CEH and PenTest+ cover similar objectives, they are not assessed in the same way, and they require a different approach in answering questions.

For example, PenTest+ focuses more on the things that the candidate should know about penetration testing, not how it is used in a live environment. This might make the exam harder for those who already work in the field and do not possess a lot of theoretical information.

On the other hand, CEH has established straightforward questions, and they are more oriented towards experience, rather than theory. Due to this reason, many candidates choose CEH without considering the price.

Exam Requirements

Many certifications differ in their exam requirements. For example, while some certifications require a minimum of experience before taking the exam, CEH requires at least two years of experience in the cybersecurity domain. They even recommend taking the Certified Network Defender exam, before opting for Certified Ethical Hacker certification.

On the other hand, PenTest+ requires 3-4 years of experience in the cybersecurity field, and they recommend taking an exam, such as Network+, or Security+ before getting certified for PenTest+.

Each of the certifications has different rules about how to study for a particular exam, and they do not tolerate exemptions. It is very important to read about these rules before taking the exam because any violation of the rules might get you permanently banned from taking each of the exams.

Exam Format

An important point to consider before taking the exam is its format and the way you are going to be assessed. When it comes to CEH and PenTest+, it is crucial to understand that in CEH you will be tested for knowledge and skills in penetration testing, while in PenTest+, for both penetration testing and vulnerability assessment.

Furthermore, CEH includes 125 questions that need to be answered in four hours, while the PenTest+ has 85 questions and you have two hours and forty-five minutes to get it done. In CEH, there are only multiple-choice types of questions, while in PenTest+ you have to do a few built-in simulations along with the multiple-choice questions.

CEH vs. PenTest+: Which One Is The Right One?

The PenTest+ allows you to work in various IT environments, like cloud, mobile, desktops, and servers. This certification proves your skills in penetration testing, vulnerability assessment, and includes management skills for planning and incorporating solutions for weak security spots. If you are already experienced in the field for 3 or 4 years, then the PenTest+ might be the right certification for you.

The CEH certification focuses on skills in understanding and solving weaknesses and issues in targeted systems. This certification enables you to think and perform like a hacker while obeying the law and using only legitimate tools.

As you could see, CEH and PenTest+ have some differences, and on many occasions, they can be crucial in terms of the certification choice. Therefore, you need to consider the options these certifications give you and what requirements need to be fulfilled when taking the exam.
